About us

“You do not have to be great to begin, but you have to begin to be great”

How did the Challenge start?

The challenge was started by Shihan Lacey in 1992 to help students to evaluate their own fitness and will power and to test themselves using high flats in Renfrewshire. Candidates ran flights of 14 steps, 15 floors, 10 times.

Now each challenge has 24 steps per flight, every lap has a flat transition as part of the lap and instead of running up 15 fights then down 15 flights, all Challengers run laps down 1 flight of stairs then up another, 150 times.

The British Martial Arts Federation is non-profit and was established in 1994 to help increase the standard of training in martial arts schools both for single and multi-style schools, and to reduce the politics in the martial arts instructor community.

We have a reputation for excellence and quality.

The British Martial Arts Federation hosts the multi-style training systems of Tam-Ryu and SafeGuard.

Both are the intellectual property of Shihan Lacey, 6th Dan. (BMAF Chief Instructor and Chairman)

The newest version of the challenge has a variety of capabilities in mind to allow Challengers to test themselves and push their own limitations and set difficult, but realistic goals for personal fitness.
